Next-Generation Monitoring and Data Informatics for Water Treatment

MISSION

OUR BACKGROUND AND MISSION

ABOUT

AdvanceH2O, an award winning venture, develops next-generation monitoring & data informatics platforms for water treatment, from the smallest individual systems to the largest utility scale plants. Our primarily mission is to help water managers worldwide avert environmental and health calamities resulting from inefficient water treatment practices. Simultaneously in the process, AdvanceH2O will help satisfy priority customer cost needs and add differentiating value by catalyzing the following:

  1. “Predict process upsets" and thereby “prevent operational failures" to avoid regulatory violations and exorbitant fines ($30K+ per day in some cases).

  2. Reduce energy and chemical demands, ultimately by 60%+ and 95%+ respectively.

  3. Optimize monitoring equipment such as sensors and simplify onerous data analytics.

  4. Reduce green house gas emissions by over 90%.

Events such as the Flint Water Crisis and the Legionnaire’s Disease outbreak in the Bronx, NY were all avoidable had more sophisticated monitoring and data analytics programs been in place. Moreover, according to the EPA, there are thousands of outstanding regulatory violations, and $700BN+ will be needed for US water infrastructure improvements ($20TN globally). The combination of increasing EPA stringency and all-time high water demands has been leading to debilitating resource costs such as that for energy and chemicals. For example, US water treatment already accounts for 4-6% of total annual national electricity consumption, and this energy footprint could double in 5-10 years (and has already doubled for some of our major water utility partners).

Our team and transformative solutions reflect nearly 20 years of expertise in developing unique solutions to overcome these challenges. Collectively, our team's awards include PowerbridgeNY/NYSERDA, Tamer Fund for Social Ventures, Columbia Venture Competition, Cleantech Open, MacArthur "Genius" Fellowship, NSF Carrier Award, and NSF I-Corps.

AdvanceH2O LEADERSHIP

BENEFITS

AdvanceH2O Team

Halil Kurt, PhD

Senior Analyst, Co-PI

Over 10 years of expertise in microbial ecology, genetics, and bioinformatics, currently as a post doctoral fellow in  the Dept. of Earth and Environmental Engineering, Columbia University.  He brings a critical skill set for next-generation monitoring and data analytics for water and wastewater treatment.

For AdvanceH2O, he will co-lead the design, testing, and building of a monitoring and data analytics platform

Kartik Chandran, PhD, PI

Over 15 years as an environmental engineer, currently as a professor in the Dept. of Earth and Environmental Engineering, Columbia University. In 2015, Dr. Chandran was awarded the MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship for his innovations in environmental molecular and microbiology, biotechnology, and environmental engineering as well as an awardee of an NSF Career Award.  He established the first biological wastewater treatment and nutrient removal program at Columbia University.  In addition, Dr. Chandran designs and develops wastewater treatment and sanitation systems around the world.

For AdvanceH2O, he will lead the design, testing, and building of a monitoring and data analytics platform integrating his long proven proprietary interpretive analytics

Young Lee

CEO

Over 15 years of industry experience in engineering and finance, currently with the Dept. of Earth and Environmental Engineering, Columbia University. As an engineer, Young worked with top 5 global firms in water & environmental tech, and large-scale infrastructure where he developed an expertise in “turn-arounds” of distressed operations.  In finance, he focused on investments in alternative assets.  For the past several years, Young has been working in early-stage technology investments and development, in particular with water and energy related concerns.  Prior to AdvanceH2O, Young was the CTO and CFO for a hydro-energy venture.

For AdvanceH2O, Young will manage operations, interface with customers, and help with design and testing
